Last summer, I volunteered in the Billericay Library, helping out with their summer reading scheme for primary and preschool children. I would chat with the children about the books they'd read and explain the reading challenge to them. It was heart warming to see their faces light up as they described the books they'd read, their favourite characters and favourite parts of the story.
My name is Francesca, I'm 16 and a self proclaimed high achiever. I could always help the children with school homework, or anything they wanted to ask about a variety of hobbies and activities. Like football? I play football every week. Basketball? I got to the National Finals with my school team.
Reading is a hobbie and a passion of mine, and I know how important it is to children in their early years and as they progress to become adults later on in life. Literature is the key to the gates of opportunity, and, holding that sentiment close to my heart, I'd love to pass on the message to young children and show them how exciting life is when you have the words to describe it.
But for some children, words aren't so easy, and that's okay: I'm always happy to help children explore whatever it is they enjoy doing and encourage them in doing so.
