Hi, my name is Emily - I am 17 years old and studying psychology, biology and sociology A levels at Varndean College. I have quite a bit of experience in childcare - first of all my younger brother has severe autism and learning difficulties and help out with him a lot at home. A few years ago I volunteered as work experience at South Downs Community Special School in Eastbourne, working 8am-4pm with reception children with different difficulties and special needs, which was a really humbling experience and was lovely to bond with and help the children at school (I helped with one-to-one maths, literacy skills, music therapy etc). I also worked for about a year at Starfish Youth Music project in Lewes, assisting young teens in bands at Lewes studios, mentoring them by helping write songs with them, setting up equipment, cleaning and just having a bit of fun - music is a passion of mine and I play piano, guitar and I sing (in a band).
I recently had to quit babysitting (through a company) looking after a 15-year old girl with autism and her younger sister and brother every Thursday - I picked up the younger sister and brother from their school, we'd go to the shop to get a snack and then go home and waited for the older sister (with autism) to come in her taxi, and we'd all do a bit of cooking each week and had a mini disco in their bedrooms and dress up or do makeovers, that sort of thing. I loved doing that, and it's unfortunate I had to quit but my college timetable changed and I ended up having a class at the same I would babysit.
Other experience includes when I worked for 'Class of Their Own', a company running after-school clubs every week - I worked on a Thursday and Friday afternoon/evening, collecting children from their classes after school and taking them to the hall where we'd set up games and activities and have a snack break, and at 6pm their parents would come and pick them up or we'd take them out to the minibuses. Again, this was a really nice experience and working for them taught me a lot. I also occasionally babysit different families around Lewes or Brighton I know (all aged children).
