Hi, I’m Maya, I’m 20 years old I was born and raised in Cambridge and currently in my final year at Royal Holloway University of London studying Art history and Comparative Literature. I grew up in a multicultural household, speaking Spanish and Italian. In my spare time, I enjoy visiting museums, travelling and doing arts and crafts. This summer, I spent five weeks working at the Cambridge Centre for Languages, a children’s summer school, as a Social Activity Officer. This involved planning and carrying out activities and excursions with children aged 7-17 whilst helping their English language skills. Caring for several children at once, especially when leading them down a busy road or carrying out a complicated activity, has really helped me become extra alert and observant in order to keep all the children under my care happy and safe.
Last summer, I babysat a 1-year-old little girl about 2-3 days a week. I was responsible for feeding her, changing her and keeping her busy and entertained. I still occasionally babysit her when I’m back in my hometown, and it has been lovely seeing her grow and develop.
Before my work in childcare, I worked in retail and the Disney Store in Cambridge. It was a great experience as I was encouraged to work at a calmer pace compared to the typical retail store to have thoughtful and meaningful interactions with guests, especially children.
