Hi! I'm Sheena, I'm a final year student at the University of Leicester. While I was born in London, I grew up in Tanzania for a significant part of my childhood- and came back to the UK in year 9 to pursue the rest of my education here. My aim, after I have graduated, is to go into teaching- specifically in SEN. This has largely stemmed from my upbringing in Tanzania, knowing I could make a difference to children who see and understand the world a little bit differently to their peers.
I’ve always been quite organised and have carried this with me in my transition from London to Leicester. From the onset of my degree I have been consistently involved with the student body through university societies, building my networking and delegation skills. At sixth form, I was Head Girl, where I was responsible for organising fund-raising events, organising student representative meetings for the rest of the secondary school as well as budgeting, invoicing, room bookings and meetings with year heads. Furthermore, I ran the student council at my Sixth Form in London, being the Head Girl, it meant being placed as the medium for students to communicate with the teachers, and I even started a mentor-system, where sixth-formers took a group of year 11s under their wing and helped with any areas they were struggling with, whether it was academic or personal. It was a really rewarding experience and forced me to become more organised with my time.
I'm lucky enough to have grown up with a mum who is a headteacher to a small nursery-primary school in Tanzania, so I have always been around kids- and enjoy spending time organising fun activities, and being the 'cool' young person they could be themselves around.
This experience will also set a strong foundation for the kind of teacher I would like to be - the same that made a lasting impression in my mind as a young student and allowed me to pursue teaching in the future.
