I was an active member of St John Ambulance Cadets, which has taught me I pride myself on being well organised and committed, as well as well ordered to whatever gets thrown my way.
I am also a certified kickboxing instructor to mentor young children and help them develop their martial art skills. This comes with many demands such as being patient as young children can easily become side-tracked. Being an instructor requires planning for lessons in advance to ensure the children have the best possible training and to attain the skills and fitness they need.
Becoming a Sports Leader required me to use my leadership skills to educate young children all about physical activity and the benefits of taking part. It was a constant challenge that required quick thinking and imagination. It allowed me to put across an instruction in many alternative ways so individuals could understand that activity.
Volunteering at my local Cub Scouts as a leader was also a very rewarding experience. Helping young children with general life skills has made me develop my skills when working with children. Being looked at as an older role model was gratifying and it felt worthwhile my time helping children and seeing them grow and develop as people.
During public holidays I ran “study sessions” for the young children in my neighbourhood who could attend and get the help they required with homework. A young disabled girl also attended my classes and it was a very challenging obstacle that I overcame and her schoolwork dramatically improved. I had substitute work for her without making her feel isolated and it was a fulfilling experience. It also required me to plan lessons in advance much like my kickboxing instructor role. This was to ensure the children would utilise the time they had.
