Currently studying a BA Hons course in Childhood Studies at Leeds Beckett University, I have learnt a prodigious amount from the different range of modules which has given me the incentive to further expand my knowledge in the field of teaching. Such as Vygotsky’s, Bruner’s and Piaget’s learning theories. I believe that these are truly inspirational in educational settings, as these theories underpin my viewpoint when working with children. These theories truly inspire me to teach, as they promote child-centered learning in the classroom, which values children’s learning. I have related my dissertation to play based learning in the early years setting. As I enjoy practising new theories and researching on new ideas in order to make a classroom a fun and enabling environment.
Alongside my university course, I have also completed a CACHE Diploma in Childcare and Education level 3, at Longley Park Sixth Form College. During this course, I have covered units 1-6. From this, I have learnt about the value of Every Child Matters, especially working in a multi-agency team and planning activities to meet the prime and specific areas of learning in the EYFS 2014.
I have worked in a variety of settings, such as in primary schools, nurseries and a secondary school, where I gained a lot of vocational experience. This was beneficial for me as it helped me decide the age range I want to teach. The most important skill I developed during that time was my communication skills. Working as a Teaching Assistant required me to communicate both verbally and nonverbally with parents, colleagues and other professionals, furthermore working as part of a multi-agency team. As well as working part of a team, I use my own initiative to always do what is best for the child. This is also a reflection of my leadership qualities which I attained through hard work and perseverance during my time there. This experience has also helped strengthen the foundation of my career in teaching and has made me more punctual, responsible, and reliable. My role as a Teaching Assistant has given me the understanding of a professional role in childcare settings. I have the ability to follow instructions, and know the importance of confidentiality. For example when observing children my records always respect the rights of the child. This is relevant to my chosen career path, as it builds me up in adapting my skills set to pursue my career in teaching.
I strive for any opportunities which come to me and believe that teaching is the best career for me, with the amount of experience I have received. As this has given me the chance to realise this.
