From a young age I've always been a peoples person it therefore seems natural for me to concentrate on jobs that provide me with opportunities to develop my communication skills with the general public.
When I was 8 years old I was diagnosed with a hearing impairment. Subsequent surgery to remove the damage to my ear drum resulted in me requiring the support of a hearing aid.
The impairment affected my education dramatically. I missed out on 30 % of my final years of primary due to ear related problems however I did not let this stop me aiming for my goals. I completed secondary education and worked unbelievably hard to achieve the required grades for me to carry on and gain my A-levels.
On leaving school I contacted local nurseries to offer myself on a voluntary basis to gain experience. I also volunteered to help at a unit for young people with autism attached to a local secondary school. I found this work extremely rewarding however challenging.
I was lucky to be offered a training placement in a local nursery and through a provider known as A4e I was given the opportunity to gain my qualifications in childcare level 1 &2.
I have worked since the age of 15. As well as training I focused on other opportunities such as part time jobs in local shops selling clothes, bikes, car equipment, outdoor equipment etc, these jobs it has allowed me the opportunity to develop so many different life skills.
While working in a primary school I had the opportunity to support children with Autism on a 1:1 basis and a 1:4 basis. This was a very rewarding position and allowed me to expand my knowledge in so many different areas of childcare.
I’ve worked with two families over the last couple of years supporting and careering for their young children.
My most recent family worked very closely with social services as two of the children in their family home are foster children this allowed me to attend many more training courses and allowed me to learn in much more depth what some children can experience.
The courses allowed me to completely change the way I think about my work and understand that children are only children once and its important for them to learn but its even more important that they are just children. Who have fun, who make friends, who get dirty and don’t need to worry about it because they were having fun.
There are so many ways in which activities can be fun and educational and that is something I’ve really focused on over the past year. I want children to be educated and i'm there to support that but they will intake the information much faster is its done playing a game or singing a song.
I have the confidence and personality to allow me to work well as part of a team but I also have the initiative to enable me to work happily on my own. I am a very organised, hardworking person and make sure that if targets and goals are set I do all I can do to meet them on time and correctly. I enjoy challenges and if I do struggle am not too proud or stubborn to ask for support.
I am a friendly, fun loving and reliable individual. I pride myself on a tidy appearance and feel punctuality is an important skill to possess. I hold a full clean driving license.
