I have very much over past year or so grown an interest in the health care sector (children/special needs).
I am currently due to graduate from University of Chichester this coming September with a degree in BA (Hons) Music & Musical Theatre. My family are from Birmingham so I will be soon moving back as of 1st July.
Over last summer I worked at Quest - camp thunderbird which is for special needs young people between the ages of 18-60 and these people had physical and behavioural challenges varying from down syndrome, autism, cerebral palsy etc. and had all different scales personally.
Then I worked as a General Health Care Assistant at Abbas Combe Nursing home (Lotus Care) for 7 months unfortunately they closed down. Also have been with FAB volunteering with a young boy with autism giving his mother a break and able to do things that his mother can’t do with him any longer.
Furthermore currently I am an agency support worker I get sent around different homes and these have been special needs adults. Some were very challenging behaviour. I did personal care, home care and social care with them. I got to assist them out by public transport, shopping, outings for lunch etc
I feel I have the necessary skills to hopefully find permanent work now and would relish the opportunity to do so and further develop and broaden my knowledge and skills within this field of work.
Is working towards an NVQ something your company can offer and support me with?
I am quite quiet, shy, timid, insecure, anxious, I care what people think slightly too much and can be quite introverted. But I find when I work with special needs people supporting them I forget about negative thoughts and find care work to be rewarding and something that I enjoy as I am patient and compassionate and hard working and open minded.
