I have recently returned from completing a 2 year working visa in Australia. I have had a total of 17 months experience working as a nanny and within this time I worked for two separate families. In February, I finished 12 months working as a nanny for a family in rural Australia, on a cattle farm. I cared for a little boy 6 and a little girl now 5, 6 days a week. My duties included school , helping them get dressed when required, drops offs and pick-ups, breakfast, lunch and dinner preparation, creating brain stimulating activities for the children, arts and crafts and general after school and weekend activities , attending school plays etc, assisting the children in farm activities such as riding and overseeing homework tasks. I was also required to complete basic house work daily and cleaned and sorted the children’s regularly. I thoroughly enjoyed my role working with this family and became close to them over the 12 months I spent with them. Providing care and support to these young children was one of the most rewarding experiences I have ever had and has only furthered my passion for this area. The younger of the two children I cared for, struggled with the pronunciation of words and sounds due to a slight speech impediment. This experience has allowed to perfect patience, empathy and encouraging persistence when working with children. Watching this child’s speech improve drastically throughout the past 12 months was such a rewarding aspect of this role.
My second role in Australia, again as a nanny, consisted of caring for two children aged 2 and 3 years. This is much like my previous role, the main difference being the youngest child being far more dependant due to age. Aspects like milk preparation, potty training, variation in appropriate food groups, nappy changes and daily naps were a slight differentiation to the previous role. Although I enjoy working for this family, I have decided to end my time in Australia but still pursue my love for child care back in England.
I have always enjoyed working and caring for children from a young age. I have a qualification in Health and Social Care A level, to which I was awarded a double distinction. Within this qualification, I completed a childcare course from which I was taught and tested on basic first aid (only officially valid for one year), disabilities and disorders in children and adolescents, basic care and nurture of babies and young children and child Psychology. This module broadened my knowledge on the behaviours of children and adolescents and gave me an insight on positive and negative aspects that can come from how a child is brought up. This course most definitely increased my confidence in working with this age group.
My enthusiasm originated from the large age gap between me and my younger brother. With eight years between us, I played a large role in his care and upbringing from a new-born. I was often asked to care for my brother, whilst my mother was carrying out tasks around the house and quickly became confident in the area of caring for him, with entertaining, feeding, changing and bathing him becoming like a second nature. As my brother got older and he attended school, I began helping him with homework tasks and projects. My parents would regularly go away on weekend trips, so I would also cook for my brother, and when i got my driving license, I often dropped him off and picked him up from school on days that fitted around work.
As I grew older, my enthusiasm for the child care continued, regularly babysitting for different families. The ages of the children ranged from five months to thirteen years. Although I cared for many children whilst in my early and late teens, I became particularly attached to one family who lived in my area. They had two young children that l babysat for regularly. I find building relationships with children easy, and enjoy their company which is why I believe I was so successful in the care of these children, whom I still have a very strong bond.
Along with private childcare, I have also worked in various childcare settings such a two primary schools, two nurseries and a paediatric ward. It was essential for me to approach and communicate with children within these setting in an empathic, calm and patient manner. I not only came across scared and anxious children, but children that struggled academically too. I look a specific interest to children with learning difficulties, and enjoyed the closer relationship I was able to build with these children, due to the nature of their learning style.
I would also like to add, I have my own transport Would I be able to forward my CV to you. I can provide references and contact details too if you so wish.
