I have always had an interest in working with children and families. I attended a childminder from the age of 4-14, where I was around children of all ages. As I got older and interacted with the younger children and their parents, I realised I wanted to pursue a career where I could be a part of helping families, mothers and young children. I find that I can get on well with all children and feel that it is important to make each child feel included. As I attended a childminders 5 days a week and through the school holidays, I have had the opportunity to be a big part of the children’s lives. I was able to interact with them through play and encourage them to learn about colours, shapes, letters, etc. I enjoyed being a part of the children’s lives and watching them grow and develop. Although I do not attend the childminders now I still see the children often and think of the childminder and her family as close family friends. I have completed all my training with Swansea Council for Voluntary service and am now going through the process of being placed with a suitable family.
As a volunteer I will be able to support parents and work alongside them. I will provide support and empathy and act as a befriender so that the parent has someone to generally go out with and talk to.
I have also had experience and been slightly involved with children in foster care, As my partner’s parents are foster carers and have been for over 10 years. I have interacted with different foster children for over 2 years and have seen some from when they were newborns until when they were finally adopted. Although I have not been able to care for these children, I have had an insight into what the procedures are for a child in care. I have also had to maintain strict confidentiality.
