My name is Bisma Khan I am 18 years of age. My strengths include being a good listener which is vital as effective commination is as much about listening as it is about speaking. Working as a team is important in an education setting as there are many different people who are invested in the development of a child, parents, schools and the medical profession. I have done a variety of charity work this included raising money for the British Heart Foundation, NSPCC children's charity and Breast Cancer. This helped me boost my self-confidence as well as my organisational skills. During my year 12 studies I was selected to become part of a buddy programme to support New Year 7 students in their transaction into secondary school. I was chosen as a result of my ability to listen and my supportive nature; I had to check their uniforms, their timetables and being able to be there for them if they were in need of support. This helped me understand what it would be like working with children and how important it is to be able to adjust your language to match the understanding of the child. It also demonstrated my patience and also showed me how important it was for me to be an inspiring role model as children look up to their elders. In my spare time I have researched the various roles I could go into working with children, and although I am not yet sure which role I will choose, I do know I want to work with the younger years. This is based on my research that the brain develops most quickly in the first few years of a child’s life and that their early years have a major influence on the rest of their development as they grow. This fascinates me and assures me that this is the age groups that would suit me best. I have completed a first aid course which included learning how to help a person who is choking, being able to treat burns, stop excessive blood flow and what to do if a person is having a heart attack. First Aid Training is essential in a child related setting, because for example if a child was to choke on a small toy I will know what to do, research shows that 1 in 3 people would not know what to do if they saw a child choking.
