In July 2015 I qualified with a 2:1 joint honours Degree in Health and Social Care with Childhood Studies. During my degree I took it upon myself to gain some extra experience knowledge within the SEN field, in order to broaden as well as strengthen my understandings. My voluntary work took place at Hiltop School, Leam Lane, Gateshead which I very much enjoyed for 12 months and Beamish Primary School and Nursery, which are two very different settings. Reflecting upon both experiences I am fully aware of how challenging and demanding each day can be, though this is what I love about working with children and meeting their needs. In addition to this I have also had the opportunity of shadowing play therapists, teachers and nurses within the RVI children’s wards.
I have continued to professionally develop my skills and experience surrounding children/ young adults through working at Hexham Priory School which is an SEN school and currently working at the Dene View Site of Trinity Academy. I see myself as having the skills and experience to meet your job opportunity as for many years I have and currently work in a school that specialises in mental health, play therapy and a variety of learning difficulties. I currently work in an environment with young people with severe social, emotional, behavioural and learning difficulties alongside their parents/careers and other professional bodies such as social workers.
Excellent communication skills are a personal strength of mine, along with empathy and honesty when working in partnership with parents, carers, children, and in multi-disciplinary team working. As I have worked alongside children of different ages, abilities and backgrounds it has enabled me to extend my theoretical knowledge creating the ability to adapt to different situations effectively. I always strive to maintain high standards of care and I am keen to learn and improve my skills as our current children are our future.
I am not afraid to voice my own opinion and be an advocate on behalf of children. Although at the same time I am aware of children’s rights and do act in accordance to policies and procedures in order to maintain a safe and happy environment for both children and the team that I will be working with. I work well within a team, listening to opinions and discussions, however I am able to use my in initiative, and have proved I can work without direct supervision.
I feel I am also enthusiastic and creative which are vital assets when working with children as well as recognising that each child is an individual and have varied needs and expectations. I have demonstrated my understanding of how a child's learning and development is affected by his or her environment and how vital it is to consider these at all times and particularly if any problems arise. It is vital that you gain the trust of a child in order to adapt to their needs as accurately to provide maximum quality of life for the individual.
I enjoy the responsibility of working with children, making sure I am doing my very best to make each day enjoyable whilst learning and developing their ability as much as possible.
I have the skills and knowledge behind working with difficult and abusive behaviour as my 1:1 student and every other pupil around school have very complex backgrounds, needs and behaviours.
I am Team Teach trained which is based on positive handing, this is required for my current every day work environment. I work very closely to ADHD, Autism and other mental health behaviours along with being very able with working with children outside of my daily environment. I have a high quality of recording and listening skills as it is vital within my line of work.
I have two nephews aged 5 and 14 whom I have helped care for when needed. I have a clean UK British driving licence which enables me to be that little more flexible to work within the community. As previously noted, I feel I have gained hugely from undertaking the degree and would appreciate the opportunity to further my experience to the highest within the child development and caring field.
