My name is Katherine ,
I am a second-year university student in Leeds studying Hospitality and Business Management. However, due to Covid-19 and recent family reasons I have decided to have a year out before returning to university.
I am 23 years old and live in Blackheath with my mother and new puppy called Louis!
I would very much like to work with children during my break, part-time or preferably full time with a loving family in the local area. I have two years’ experience working with children and an interest in the development of children having watched and listened to my mother who practises as a midwife and health visitor.
While I was studying for my "A" levels at Blackheath High School I worked as a nanny with a local family who have three girls, aged 5, 7 and 13 at the time. I would pick them up from school bring them home, make dinner, help them with homework and play until their parents had finished work. I did this for eight months and loved it. I proved myself to be reliable and trustworthy and improved my domestic skills ensuring the girls had a varied and balanced diet including snacks and meals.
On completion of my " A" levels I moved to Whistler Canada and became a qualified ski- instructor where I taught children aged 5-12 of varying abilities how to ski. I taught different groups of children each week from 8am-3pm, I also helped occasionally in 'The Mini's' where the children were aged 3-4 years old. I learnt that I am very calm when under pressure, tolerant and patient, as in all things, different children have different abilities when teaching new skills and incorporating individuals into a group.
After I finished travelling, I moved back to the UK where I began attending university in Leeds. I helped my aunt and uncle during the weekends and occasionally during the week to care for their three children, twins aged 1 and their little girl who is five who live in Huddersfield. I would change nappies, read to them and generally keep them entertained. I used my common sense and initiative so that their parents had time to undertake other task's as they both work as teachers.
I am a very capable, organised, and efficient worker and genuinely love looking after children. I am kind and compassionate however can be firm when needed to ensure safety and understanding.
I have a variety of games on hand most of which I learnt while in Canada. I love cooking and baking and think it's important to get children involved with these activities at a young age, I have done this with all the children I have looked after in the UK and I think it's a great way to learn responsibility while being creative.
I am continually active and ensure I keep fit by swimming and cycling regularly. I enjoy sport and being outdoors which is something I try to get children involved with. I have good stamina and energy levels to keep children entertained. Although I am flexible and proactive depending upon the individual child's needs.
I studied piano and achieved Grade 1 and Clarinet Grade 4 whilst at school, so could help with music practice if required. I am a keen reader of varied genres, especially thrillers.
I have excellent interpersonal skills having worked within the hospitality industry and enjoy meeting new people. I am used to working extra hours if required and would very much like the opportunity to work with children.
