I have recently completed an apprenticeship at Pendleside Hospice working on Day care services based in Brierfield. My role as ‘Healthcare Apprentice’ and my duties included spending time with the patients, attending college once a week, making cups of tea, serving meals, activities with the patients and day trips. I also escorted patients on transport picking and dropping patients to and from home. I also had input on Emis and know how to work the programme. I have learned my toilet and bathing training on the inpatient unit at the hospice and pressure area care. I worked there for two years and have completed level 2 Health and social care and almost completed my level 3.
I was also the meal time co-ordinator where I monitored the nutrition of patients on a daily basis making a record of everything they ate and drank during meal times such as how much they’ve eaten, made sure they had the correct equipment they needed such as non-slip mats, adapted cutlery.
It also meant I had to ensure the patients were getting the correct dietary requirements at meal times for example, if they needed a soft diet or if they needed liquidised foods then I would ensure this was happening. I then put these records onto Emis and fed back any worries or concerns I may have had back to the staff nurse.
Working at the hospice I also attended conferences. I have been an advocate for the hospice, promoting the hospice outside of work at educational and fundraising events as well as speaking at a national conference about the future of hospice care. One which was at Birchalls Food Company and one at Nelson and Colne College where I spoke in front of a large group of people about my apprenticeship at the hospice and the skills I have gained whilst working there. I have also attended the national hospice UK conference and spoke on the podium in front of many healthcare professionals across the country and answered questions about my role as a healthcare apprentice. I also won an award recently after being nominated by Pendleside Hospice for Young Employee of The Year 2017.
I have previously worked at The Pendle inn which is based in Barley as a waitress. My duties included setting and clearing tables, talking to customers, bringing out food and drinks and duties in the kitchen and helping out the pot wash towards the end of my shifts.
I have had previous work at Scruples in Barrowford as a sales assistant. My duties included answering the phone, sorting out the stock room, making drinks for customers, cleaning the show rooms and the rest of the shop, help opening up and closing up the shop.
I have had previous work at Bombay lounge waitressing, where my duties included clearing empty glasses, taking drink orders, clearing plates, setting tables and cleaning the tables after.
In year 10 I did my work experience at Walton lane Children’s Centre for 2 weeks. My role involved catering duties, organising dance lessons, playing and supervising the children and general day to day duties when required.
I baby sit on a regular basis and enjoy interaction with young children.
With my health and social class I spent the day at a special needs school based in Burnley, where I was shown round the whole building and introduced to all the children. I was able to find out what they offer to children with different kinds of disabilities and how they control things in specific situations.
Skills and personal qualities:
I am a very good time keeper and very confident when speaking to someone new or even a group of people. I am punctual and very well mannered. I would consider myself as polite, kind, honest, enthusiastic, reliable and very well respected. I also consider myself as an adaptable person and am keen to learn new skills and open to new challenges.
Interests:
My interests include travelling of which I have been to many countries, going out on day trips, cooking, baby sitting, socialising, meeting people and shopping.
