From an early age I have had a passion for working with special needs children and young people. I have worked with special needs children, with a range of individual needs and have loved every minute of getting to know the children and working alongside them.
I have studied Childcare and Education (Early Years Educator): Level 3 NCFE CACHE Diploma at Nescot college
I have completed work experience through NESCOT in Dorchester Primary School, Cherrystones Nursery, Sparrows Pre-school and Disability Challengers pre-school. throughout the course I worked with children from birth to five years.
I enjoy and am knowledgeable about all areas of childcare, mainstream and special needs. I am confident, punctual a team worker and very reliable. I have excellent communication skills, I am confident in talking to adults and parents and furthered my knowledge in working with and understanding children with individual needs.
I have been trained in lots of different areas such as; Safeguarding (March 2015, 2016 and 2017), Management of actual or potential aggression - MAPA (November 2015, refreshed March 2017), Moving people (December 2015), Specific feeding and choking management (January 2016) and Basic life support (March 2016). Medication administration (November 2016), Gastrostomy feeding (November 2016), First aid (December 2016) Fire Marshall (March 2017) These training events are important and they are furthering my understanding and knowledge of how to meet every child’s individual needs and create the best possible time for them.
I stated at Disability Challengers as a play worker in April 2015 and then became deputy play leader in November 2016. My duties include; helping the leader plan days, sign children in, complete paper work and ensure the day is running smoothly. I have been asked to help out at other schemes and have always been more than happy to go over and help. I provide a safe and fun environment for all children whilst learning and growing as an individual and together. Within this job you must be; confident, enthusiastic, playful, patient, team worker and trustworthy. I have all these attributes. I ensure I read each child's information sheet to know what allergies and needs they have to create a safe environment. Team work is vital, I feel I am an excellent team worker and am confident to help anyone in need. My role consists of sitting with the children and help those that need it and support others. We toilet the children ourselves, alongside the designated toileting member of staff that day. Hoisting children when needed and ensuring they are comfortable. I also know basic Makaton so I can communicate with the non-verbal children and their parents.
Through working at Disability Challengers, I have become a personal assistant for two boys who attend Challengers on the weekend. My roles and responsibilities are the same for each and work and strive towards the best possible care for the both of them. I work with the family within their home and care for him and his older brother. I work with them two evenings a week. I greet the boy from the school bus, toilet, feed and cook for him and his brother dinner and then feed. I take him on outings to the park, on bus rides and lots of other activities that are both educational and fun in order to develop his learning.
I am based in baby room, however we work very closely as a team and I am happy to work with any age group when needed. We use talk time baskets to promote children’s speech and language and always have a variety of toys out, which are available for all the children to reach if they would like to play with something different. I have twelve key children and promote each of their independence and development according to their abilities, initiating activities and including them all. I help them with their health and self-care. We have meetings with parents and take all comments seriously. I show then development plans and get as much parents input as I can. I am using everything I learnt through my level 3 qualification and putting it into my practice
