Debbie, after-school childcare - WN6 Standish

I left school at the age of sixteen and started to work as a clerical officer within the Social Services Department of Wigan Metropolitan Borough Council. At that age I had already secured a post to commence nurse training but was only able to start once I had reached the age of eighteen. I started my Nursing career in 1984 at the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary Wigan. During my training I worked at the R.A.E.I., Whelley Hospital and Billinge Hospital. On qualifying as a Registered General Nurse I started working on a female surgical ward, here I really started to learn what it was to be a qualified nurse. I worked here before moving to West Germany with my husband who was serving in the Armed Forces. Whilst I was there I continued to work in a nursing post at the local military medical centre. This time gave me a great introduction to the managerial side of nursing as I got the opportunity to work in other areas that are not clinically based. Working non-clinically gives me the chance to experience the wider remit of a health organisation, in this case the army, and how it functions. Whilst in West Germany my husband had to do a tour of Northern Ireland. During this time I returned to the United Kingdom and secured a post as a Nursing Sister in a nursing home. During my time here I provided care for senior people from all backgrounds. I was able to put the residents at their ease, gain their confidence and deal sympathetically with their problems and fears. Although I thoroughly enjoyed working in Haigh Nursing Home, I felt that my true vocation was to work in an acute setting something that I had been lucky enough to perform since qualifying. I was therefore glad when I returned to West Germany six months later with my husband and was lucky enough to continue working in the Army Medical Centre at Napier Barracks. When I returned to this country nursing posts were difficult to find and I took a position with the local Authority. I have many years experience in a variety of administrative roles that have required communication at various levels and in various situations. I have used a variety of databases in my various roles at the
Local Authority. I am proficient in different software such as Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. I have recently studied and successfully completed a (CLAiT) computer course part time at Wigan and Leigh College. I am able to deal sensitively with matters which are both confidential and potentially difficult. I have often held very responsible positions, being given access to very private information e.g. Medical Records, Financial Records and Personal Complaints etc. I have always acted with the utmost professionalism and been praised for doing so. My sickness record was exemplary. I have taught and assisted in organising Sunday school, at my Methodist Church. I found this role extremely rewarding. I loved the laughter, friendship and at times, the challenge that was part of teaching.
I am an extremely organised person and can work to deadlines evidence of this has been the successful completion of a HNC in Business Studies in which I gained distinctions and merits, and more recently with the successful completion at Manchester Metropolitan University, of a Return to Practice course. After several years away from academic. I personally found studying at degree level challenging at times although ultimately extremely rewarding. As a mature student, as a mum and wife of thirty years, I feel I have the qualities and experience you desire for this position.
