I am currently taking a gap year after my first year studying medicine at Cambridge University and have lots of experience working with children in a variety of roles. I have spent 4 years as a volunteer playworker working with disabled children at the Yard in Edinburgh; this presented many challenges with communication, especially with parents and has had a profound impact on my communication skills. The Gold Duke of Edinburgh award taught me the importance of a positive and encouraging attitude. I have also spent weeks volunteering with Campus Children's Holidays, which involved working effectively in a team to ensure the children’s safety and enjoyment and good organisational skills in order to run the week smoothly. I have also worked with children from a few months old to 6 years old in Tanzania for a month, whilst volunteering in an orphanage and paediatric children's ward. I am a very conscientious individual who is willing to work hard, independently and within a team and is able to take initiative when required.
